Midfielder Scott McTominay had a goal controversially disallowed in the match against Spain.
The Scottish national team has been in excellent form in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, having secured five consecutive victories. Heading into their clash with Spain, they were brimming with confidence. The “Tartan Army” controlled the game well, making life difficult for their Spanish counterparts.
In the 61st minute, Scotland was awarded a free-kick from the left side. McTominay stepped up to take the free-kick. Continuing his impressive form for the national team, McTominay unleashed a powerful shot into Spain’s net.
Just a few days earlier, McTominay had scored a brace in a dramatic 2-1 comeback win for Manchester United against Brentford in the 8th round of the Premier League.
However, McTominay’s joy was short-lived. VAR intervened, and referee Serdar Gozubuyuk disallowed McTominay’s goal against Spain. Some argued that Jack Hendry may have been offside or committed a foul against goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Nevertheless, any explanation lacked clarity due to the sensitive nature of the situation. After having his goal disallowed, McTominay was visibly frustrated. He had every reason to react as his goal had put Scotland in the lead.
To make matters more bitter for McTominay, Spain scored right after the disallowed goal. A substitute player, Jesus Navas, delivered a troublesome cross for Alvaro Morata to head into Scotland’s net in the 73rd minute. In the 86th minute, Oihan Sancet coolly sealed the score at 2-0.
After the match, midfielder John McGinn expressed his frustration: “You have to be very careful with what you say. I think everyone who watched the game tonight, no matter where you are, feels like we didn’t get any 50/50 decisions. It was a big struggle.
We’re always up against it in big moments. We knew at least a point tonight would help us achieve what we wanted, but it’s disappointing. It’s tough to win here, and in that situation, it’s almost impossible.”
There was too little time left for Scotland to find a goal. The match ended with a 2-0 score in favor of Spain. La Furia Roja avenged their 0-2 loss to the same opponent in the previous fixture. However, it’s evident that Scotland has reasons to feel aggrieved.
With this loss, Scotland couldn’t secure an early spot in Euro 2024. Nevertheless, with their performance, they still have a chance. It’s just unfortunate for McTominay that his efforts were bitterly denied. Despite the defeat, Scotland remains at the top of the table with 3 points more than Spain, although they have played one more match.
