In 1973, Takahiro “Taki” Kitamura was born in Tokyo, Japan. At the age of two, he moved to the United States with his parents, and his father became a professor at the University of California, Davis. Kitamura’s mother instilled in him and his siblings a love of Japanese culture, including its cuisine and folklore. During his senior year of high school in 1991, Kitamura got his first tattoo. After earning his college degree in 1994, he settled in San Jose, California, where he has resided and worked ever since. In 1998, Kitamura began his tattooing career, and he was fortunate enough to be accepted as an apprentice by Horiyoshi III in Japan, an experience that he found to be incredible.
